As businesses compile more data and employ more diverse types of data, reliable methods of sending files over 100MB are becoming more and more critical. This is especially true when large files like videos need to be sent, whether for in-office use or directly as part of your business. The ability to send these large files has kept up with the demand for the files themselves, meaning you have a variety of free methods for transmitting large files.

Archival Compression

Download and install an archival compression utility such as 7Zip or WinRAR (links in Resources). Ideally, you want a program capable of compressing and expanding RAR archives, although if need be one merely capable of ZIP compression will suffice.

Launch the compression utility and create a new archive file.

Add the file you wish to compress into the archive file. This varies between utilities, but most support simple drag-and-drop or adding via menu buttons. In some utilities like 7Zip, navigate to the file in the built-in browser, right-click the file, and select to add to a new archive.

Configure the compression settings as necessary. Depending on the utility, this can be configured right when you create the new archive, just before compression begins or as part of a separate Preferences menu. Configuration options often include changing the level of data compression, enabling you to make for shorter encodes or more compact files.

Select the option to begin compression. This varies from program to program, but generally comes at the end of configuration or is activated by a separate button or command.

Log in to your account with a cloud storage service such as MediaFire or RapidShare (links in Resources), or start an account if you haven't already.

Upload the file you wish to transfer via the service's upload service. Most services require you to sign in to your account and upload to a folder online, but some like MediaFire also feature a desktop application that enables you to directly add files from your folders to your account.

Copy the download link provided by the service once the upload has completed and send it to the file's intended recipient.

Instruct the recipient to click the link and download the file from the cloud storage service.

Instant Messaging Programs

Download, install and launch an instant messaging program like Windows Live Messenger or Skype on both the sending and receiving ends.

Open a chat session with the file's intended recipient and select the option to send a file in your IM client.

• When compressing files, typically RAR compression offers smaller file sizes and additional security options like encryption compared to ZIP. • Cloud storage can be used for more than just transferring files. For example, back up data using cloud storage, enabling you to preserve a copy of your information online and ready for download.
• Most cloud storage services allow fairly large file sizes for storage -- upwards of 200MB per file. If you're willing to invest a little extra money, many cloud storage services offer premium levels of service with increased maximum file sizes, increased storage caps and other perks.

Warning

• While many cloud storage services keep files entrusted to them secure, no security is absolute. If you're trying to transfer sensitive corporate information or other documents that can't be allowed into the wrong hands, consider adding encryption to the files via RAR compression or finding another transfer medium.
